Kilmurry Ibrickane 2011

The following is a brief report of all the teams representing Kilmurry Ibrickane in 2011.   This was the year that we contested both the Intermediate and Senior finals, we won our 12th Senior County Championship, our 6th Cusack Cup and 4th John O’Gorman Cup while in under age our minors were narrowly beaten at the Semi Final and our National Schools and Under 12s & Under 13s had significant wins.

National Schools 7 A-Side
The Annagh/Coore/Scropul combination won the Clare 7 A-side schools in Gael Scoil Michael O’Ciosog by coming out of a tough group that consisted of Barefield and Ennis Boys Schools.   They went on to beat Knockanean in the semi final and in the final they took on Ennis Boys School again in one of the best schools games to be seen at the venue Annagh/Coore/Scropul came out on top on a winning scoreline of 2-5 to 1-4.

National Schools 15 A-Side

Kilmurry Ibrickane Schools made history this year by winning their first ever 3 in a row in this competition.   They beat Lissycasey/Ballynacally and Kilmihil to come out of the group, and they met Kilmihil again in the Final winning on a scoreline of 6-8 to 2-3.  Well done to all players and many thanks to their mentor Dermot Coughlan.

Under-10s & Under 11s

Under the guidance of Kevin Hanrahan, Kieran O’Dea, Martin Lynch, Derrick Lynch, Gerard Mescall, Thomas McMahon & Thomas Sexton our under 11s entered the West Clare Under 11A competition.  We came through the qualifying rounds and met Clondegad in the semi final.   It took a second meeting to get a result.  We drew the first game on Wednesday 7th August in Kilmihil.  Final score was 1-6 each.   However in the replay Kilmurry Ibrickane ran out winners on a score of 1-6 to 1-3.   In the final we played Cooraclare in Cooraclare and won the competition on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-2.  Our under 10s qualified for the Semi Final of the West Clare Championship at Doonbeg.   However in the Cooraclare were worthy winners on a score of 2-9 to 1-3.

Under-12
There was no competition at County level for U-12's this year; it was run off as a go games competition with every player getting 15 minutes playing time.   Kilmurry Ibrickane finished up being paired against Cooraclare in the end game which they won on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-3.   Next up for the U-12's was the West Clare Competition, Kilmurry Ibrickane beat Kilrush and Doonbeg in the earlier rounds & Cooraclare in the semi final.   They then met Lissycasey in the final which they won by 7-10 to 2-3.

Under-13
Kilmurry qualified for the Joe Mc Caw Shield Final by beating Ennistymon B and Kilrush after extra time.  They took on Ennistymon A in the final winning on a scoreline 1-6 to 0-5.   Next up was the U-13 West Clare Championship in which they beat Miltown in the first round and Lissycasey in the semi-final.   In the final they took on Cooraclare winning on a scoreline of 3-3 to 1-7, to finish off a successful year for the underage footballers of Kilmurry Ibrickane.  The mentors for both the Under 12s and Under 13s were Dermot Coughlan, Sylvester Nugent and Enda Coughlan

 Under 14

Under the guidance of Brian Cooney, David Galvin & Paul O’Connor our under 14s made an early exit from the competition when we lost our group games to Clondegad & Kilmihil.  However in Division 1 of the championship wins over Eire Og, Doora/Barefield, St. Breckan’s, Miltown & Clarecastle meant that we narrowly missed out on qualifying for a semi final spot.

Under 16

This year we contested Division 1 of this competition.   Wins over Doora/Barefield, Eire Og & Clondegad with a draw when playing Kilrush meant we had a pay off against the North Clare amalgamation of Kilfenora/Liscannor/Michael Cusack’s.  However the amalgamation were victorious on a score of 2-6 to 0-7   the under 16s mentors for 2011 were Kevin Sexton, Declan Callinan & David Galvin

Minor

Under the guidance of the management team comprising of Paul Hickey, Jamsey Pender & Martin Cahill our minors recorded wins over Cooraclare and Miltown in the early rounds.  This merited a quarter final against Wolfe Tones which we won on a score of 1-10 to 0-8.   On Saturday 24th September at Doonbeg we played Kilmihil in the Semi Final.   This was the classic game of two halves.   We were assisted by a strong wind in the first half and finished the half with a good lead (1-5 to 0-1).   However the lead was not enough as Kilmihil did put in a good second half and ran out winners on a final score of  0-11 to 1-7.

Under 21

Our Under 21s had a very early exit from the competition this year.   Managed by James Murrihy and Martin Lynch they were outscored by St. Breckan’s in Ennistymon on 26th June.  Final score was St. Breckan’s 1-15, Kilmurry Ibrickane 0-6

Junior

Our Junior team commenced their playing activities in County League  Division 6 with a 2-9 to 1-12 draw against Kildysart in Pairc Naomh Mhuire , Quilty on 5th March.   Wins over O’Curry’s, Clarecastle and Cooraclare merited a semi final place against Doora/Barefield in Lissycasey on 17th July.  However on the day Doora Barefield got the upper hand and won the game on a score of 0-17 to 1-6.  Their mentors this year were Kevin Sexton & Thomas Power.

Intermediate

This year our Intermediate team contested Division 3 of the County League. Wins over Corofin, Kilmihil, Ml. Cusack’s, Kilfenora & Ballyvaughan meant we consolidated our position in Division 3 and finished ranking 3rd place.   Kilmurry Ibrickane contested the Clare Intermediate Football Championship Final for the first time since 1977.    On that occasion we overcame Doonbeg in Lahinch.   Previously this competition was won by teams representing our parish in 1939, 1945 & 1953.  Captained by Thomas O’Connor, with Vincent Talty the Vice Captain Kilmurry Ibrickane started their campaign on 4th June 2011 in Ballynacally when we overcame O’Callaghan’s Mills on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-3.    Further wins over Kildysart (0-10 to 0-7) and Kilfenora (2-13 to 1-6) meant we qualified for the semi final against O’Curry’s in Kilrush on 17th September 2011.    We overcame O’Curry’s on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-5.   In the final we played Clondegad in Cooraclare.   This game was in the balance until the final quarter when Clondegad found the net.   Final score was Clondegad 1-10, Kilmurry Ibrickane 0-9.   We are deeply grateful to our panel of players and their management team of James Murrihy, Dermot Burke and John Talty for the work they have done with the team this year.

Seniors

Once again this was a very historic year for our senior team.   Under the guidance of John Kennedy, Patrick Murrihy and Joe Hurley (not forgetting the contribution made by Ger Lawlor earlier in the year), they recorded an unbeaten run in all competitions in the county.   This resulted in two pieces of silver ware being captured by them in the space of a week.   In the Cusack Cup Final in Cooraclare on 24th July we beat near neighbours and arch rivals Doonbeg on a score of 0-13 to 1-8, while on 1st August in Doonbeg  for the John O’Gorman Cup final we overcame Cooraclare on a score of  2-10 to 0-11.

In the Senior Championship we beat Kilmihil, Kilrush and Wolfe Tones to qualify for the quarter final v Cooraclare in Kilmihil on 17th September.   This was a very tight game and we eventually came out winners by the narrowest of margins 0-7 to 1-3.   In the Semi Final in Lissycasey on 1sy October we met up with Cratloe.  This was a game with a nail biting finish.   We ran out winners on a score of 1-7 to 0-9.     This win meant we were to contest the County Final for the 18th time in our history.   In the final on 16th October in Cusack Park, we overcame Doora Barefield by 0-17 to 0-5 to capture our 12th County Senior Title.   As I write this we are now preparing for the Munster Semi Final on 20th Novemeber.
